Power Team offers solutions to overcome your heavy lift challenge with over 96 years of experience

RH603 60-ton, Single-Acting, Spring-return Center-Hole Hydraulic Cylinder

The Power Team RH603 is a 60-ton, single-acting, spring-return center-hole hydraulic cylinder engineered for tensioning, pulling, and pushing operations where a through-rod or cable is required. It delivers a rated output of 60 tons at 10,000 psi, with a 3-inch strokeand acenter hole sized to accommodate tensioning rods, anchors, or cables. The single-acting configuration uses hydraulic pressure for extension and a high-strength internal spring for retraction, ensuring dependable return without the need for hydraulic force on the retract cycle. The cylinder’s chrome-plated pistonandPower Tech-treated body provide corrosion and wear resistance in demanding industrial or field conditions.

Constructed from high-strength alloy steel, the RH603 incorporates precision-ground internal bearing surfaces for load alignment and long service life. The collar threadandbase mounting configuration support use in fixed jigs, post-tensioning systems, or maintenance setups requiring accurate force application in confined spaces. A standard 3/8 inch NPTFport accepts Power Team hydraulic couplers for compatibility with 10,000 psi systems. The RH603 is part of Power Team’s RH Series center-hole cylinders, designed for structural stressing, bearing removal, and other heavy-duty operations requiring direct axial force transmission through a hollow piston.

The RH603 is tailored for jobs where you need to push or pull through the cylinder, such as cable tensioning, anchor bolt operations, or forcing studs, thanks to its center-hole design (2-1/8in hole. Its 3-inch stroke affords a moderate travel which, combined with its robust 60-ton capacity, makes it suitable for heavy industrial tasks in construction, rigging, or maintenance environments. The threaded collar provides secure load hold when hydraulic pressure is removed, ensuring the load won’t drift or slip under dead-end conditions. The fact that the cylinder components are Power-Tech treated enhances its resistance to corrosion and wear in demanding working environments.

The RH603 features a limited 3-inch stroke, making it suitable for short-travel operations; applications requiring greater displacement should incorporate precision-machined spacer blocks or mechanical linkage systems to extend working range.

As a single-acting, spring-return unit, piston retraction is dependent on the internal bias spring, which may be impeded by high frictional resistance, side loading, or misalignment within the load path. Accurate axial alignment is critical, as eccentric or lateral forces can induce uneven wear on the bearing surfaces and piston rod, particularly when the center-hole configuration is utilized for tensioning applications.

Additionally, due to the high stored elastic energy within components such as the retainer nut and spring assembly, all maintenance, disassembly, or internal inspection should be performed exclusively by qualified service personnel following manufacturer procedures to ensure safety and maintain structural integrity.

The RH603 is rated for 60 tons at a design pressure near 9,75 psi, which scales to approximately 61.6 tons at 10,000 psi. It has a 3.00 in stroke, a retracted height of 9.25 in, and extends to 12.25 in. The effective piston area is 12.31 in², with an oil capacity of 37 in³. Its outside diameter is 6.25 in, piston rod diameter 3.59 in, and it features a center hole of 2.12 in (to allow rod, cable, or other pass-through elements). The threaded collar is 6¼-12, with 2.50 in length of thread, and base-to-port spacing is 1 in. As is common in the RH single-acting series, the standpipe, piston, and gland nut are treated with “Power-Tech” for corrosion and abrasion resistance.

  • Materials / treatments:
    • Cylinder “standpipe,” piston, and body are treated with Power-Tech (nitrocarburization) for corrosion and abrasion resistance.  • Interchangeable piston head inserts allow switching from tapped to plain hole configurations.

Load / safety features:

• Withstands full dead-end loads (i.e. load can be held when the cylinder is fully extended without hydraulic pressure).
• Parts list warns the retainer nut is loaded with high spring force 230 lb - disassembly must be handled by authorized service centers.

From its parts documentation, the RH603 carries a retainer nut under spring preload of 230 lbs—this means disassembly is hazardous unless done by an authorized repair center because improper release of spring force can cause injury. Its parts list also clarifies that it supports “full dead-end loads” — i.e., loads can be held when the cylinder is fully extended without hydraulic pressure.

The cylinder is furnished with a standard 9796 3/8 in NPT female half coupler (typical for RH series except RH120) for hydraulic connection. Also, the RH603 allows interchangeable piston head inserts (plain vs threaded) to adapt to different mounting or tooling requirements.

RH Series Cylinder Specifications

RH-Series Power Team Cylinders

Material Composition of RH Single-Acting Series Cylinders

1. Steel Construction (Single-Acting Models, 30–100 Ton)

  • The standpipe is made from steel and treated with a “Power Tech” corrosion-resistant finish.

  • The piston rod is plated steel, designed to resist wear and improve seal longevity.

  • These heavy-duty cylinders (30 – 100 ton, single-acting) are clearly built with robust steel components

  • Certain single-acting models—notably the RHA306—feature an aluminum cylinder body and piston. These are lighter and more portable while still offering durability.

  • Additionally, standpipe corrosion resistance is provided via the Power Tech treatment even when aluminum components are used.

  • Additional Notes

    • The plated piston rod (with superior packing) appears to be common across the RH Series, enhancing wear resistance and sealing for longer cycle life.

    • The Power Tech finish is applied to protect steel parts like the standpipe from corrosion
